Believing That He Is

Sermon Title: “Believing That He Is: The Foundation of Faith”

Scripture Text:

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV):

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Introduction

Today, we focus on a simple yet profound truth: to come to God, we must believe that He is. This verse encapsulates the foundation of our relationship with God — faith rooted in the belief that He exists. Without this belief, our spiritual journey cannot truly begin.

I. Understanding the Word “Is”

Let’s define the word “is” in this context.

“Is”* signifies *existence** — the very fact that God exists outside of time, space, and creation.

It affirms God’s eternal, self-existent nature.

In the original Hebrew, God’s name revealed to Moses was “I AM” (Exodus 3:14), emphasizing His eternal, unchanging existence.

When Hebrews says, “believe that He is,” it means trusting that God truly exists—not just as a concept, but as a living, personal being.

Why is this important?

Because if we do not believe that God exists, our faith is incomplete. Our relationship depends on trusting in a living God, not a myth or an idea.

II. The Significance of Believing That He Is

Faith as the Foundation:* Hebrews 11:6 tells us *”without faith it is impossible to please Him.”**

Believing that God “is” is the starting point of faith — trusting in His existence, His character, and His promises.

Modern-Day Application:

Many people believe in a higher power, but true faith requires active belief in God’s personal, ongoing existence. It’s not enough to acknowledge His existence historically or abstractly; we must believe He exists now and is involved in our lives.

III. How This Scripture Applies Today

Trust in God’s Sovereignty:

Believing that God “is” means trusting that He is in control, even when circumstances seem chaotic.

Faith in Prayer:

When we pray, we must believe that God hears and exists to answer.

Confidence in His Promises:

We believe that God’s promises are true and certain because He “is.”

Living with Purpose:

Knowing that God exists encourages us to live honorably, knowing we serve a living God who is watching.

Overcoming Doubt:

Faith rooted in the belief that God “is” helps us overcome doubts and fears, trusting in His continual presence.

IV. The Impact of Understanding and Incorporating These Principles

Deepens Our Faith:** Recognizing God’s existence as a foundational truth strengthens our trust in Him.

Encourages Persistent Seeking:* Knowing He *”is”** motivates us to seek Him diligently (Hebrews 11:6).

Transforms How We Live:** It moves us from passive belief to active faith, obedience, and reliance on God’s presence.

V. Additional Scripture References

Exodus 3:14:* *”I AM that I AM” — God’s declaration of self-existence

John 1:1-3:* *”In the beginning was the Word… all things were made by him” — confirms God’s existence through His creative power

Romans 1:20:* *”For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen” — God’s existence evident in creation

Psalm 19:1:* *”The heavens declare the glory of God” — nature testifies to His existence

VI. Modern-Day Examples

Personal Testimonies:**

Many believers testify that their faith in God’s existence helped them through trials—knowing He “is” present even when unseen.

Scientific Evidence:**

Some point to the universe’s complexity and order as evidence of a Creator—believing “He is” behind the creation.

Historical Miracles and Changed Lives:**

Countless stories of miraculous healings or transformed lives serve as modern evidence that God “is.”

Conclusion

Believing that God “is” is the cornerstone of our faith. It is the assurance that the Creator of the universe is alive, present, and active in our lives today. When we accept this truth, our faith becomes unshakable, and our lives are transformed.

Let us commit anew to believe that He **”is”, and in doing so, draw closer to Him, knowing that our faith pleases Him and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.**

Prayer:

Lord, help us to truly believe that You *”are”*—that You exist beyond our understanding, beyond time, and beyond circumstances. Increase our faith to trust in Your presence and Your promises. May our lives reflect this unwavering belief in You, our living God. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
