Ruler or guide
Christian pastor is not supposed to rule over the lives of his congregation in an authoritarian or domineering manner. Instead, the role of a pastor, according to the Bible, is one of service, leadership, and spiritual guidance, carried out with humility, love, and respect for the members of the congregation.
The Bible provides clear guidance on the nature of leadership within the Christian community. In 1 Peter 5:2-3 (NIV), the apostle Peter, himself a prominent leader in the early church, instructs pastors and elders: “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
This passage emphasizes that Christian leaders, including pastors, are called to be shepherds who care for and guide the members of the congregation. The language used here is one of service, willingness, and humility, rather than domination or control.
Furthermore, Jesus himself provided a model of servant leadership during his earthly ministry. In Mark 10:42-45 (NIV), Jesus said to his disciples, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
This passage underscores the principle that Christian leadership, including pastoral leadership, should be characterized by humility, service, and a willingness to put the needs of others before one’s own.
In summary, according to the Bible, a Christian pastor is not meant to rule over the lives of his congregation in a domineering or authoritarian manner. Instead, the pastor is called to serve, guide, and care for the congregation with humility and love, following the example of Jesus Christ and the guidance provided in the Scriptures.
